Want to Make Life, Your Creativity, and Productivity Meaningful in 2017? Incorporate “Getting Away” Into Your Daily Life

2016 has been tough. Life change, a frustrating job, career change, you name it. The tougher life got the more I heard people in my life say, “you need to get way.” A vacation will help you. Okay, but that’s one week out of twelve months. How effective will that be?

What happens when you get away that helps you recharge?

For me it is getting some extra rest, doing only the things I really enjoy, and cutting off from the problems and busyness of life. What is it for you?

The minute I am relieved from major life stress I immediately have more ideas, and the strength to try them. Getting away does help, but I can’t rely on a one week vacation to give my life the refreshment it needs.

Here is what we can do to get away from life and give ourselves the opportunity to stimulate new ideas, creativity, boost productivity, and develop meaningful lives.

  1. Assess your most relaxing vacation, down time or time away. Be honest. What “really” helped you refresh?
  2. Now take a look at your list. Starting tomorrow, how can you realistically incorporate these things into your daily life. This may mean you need to change your life, but that’s okay. We might have things in our life that we need to get rid of to make our lives more meaningful.
  3. Do them. Don’t read a million blog posts, buy a new book, take a class or get a life coach. Just start doing these things everyday for the next six weeks (the time it takes to develop new habits), and you will see change. You have all you need to make change.

Here is what this looks like for me.
Rest-I need to monitor how much sleep I get, and ensure that a few nights a week I get an extra hour or two of sleep.

Doing only the things I really enjoy-Big one for me! I have found out that I often do what everyone else likes to do. I am a people pleaser. I won’t say, ” I don’t want to do that”, often enough. On vacation I do make it a point to say this is what I want to do, or don’t want to do. I NEED to do this in my daily life.

In 2017 I am making a list of the things I really want to do that bring me joy and do them each week and month. When that one week vacation comes around there will be less pressure to jam pack it with activities that I want to do because I will already be doing them.

Cutting Off From Problems-This isn’t so hard. I need to limit the amount of time I text and spend on Social Media. I need to stay out of peoples business and ensure that I put my phone down for a couple hours each night. That’s what I do on vacation. We must have a break from the problems in our lives if we are going to maintain any hope of sanity in this crazy world.

Cut Off From the Busyness of Life-I learned how to do this in 2015, but need to ensure I maintain this practice. In 2015 I cut off from everything, and have been rebuilding my life ever since. It’s been the best thing for my life, marriage, and my creativity. I don’t do things just to do things, and I ask myself, “do I want to do this” before saying yes to an activity. I am mindful about why I do what I do. I protect my life, and my marriage by ensuring that I have time to rest, contemplate, think and recharge. These things are vital to living a creative, and meaningful life.

I don’t know what this looks like for you. I encourage you to find ways to incorporate aspects of vacation into your daily life. I guarantee you that when you do you will be more creative, have the courage to try new things, will be more productive, and live a more meaningful life.

What can you do starting tomorrow to incorporate “getting away”into you daily life?
