Thoughts on Faith & Creativity: Was God the First Artist?

What is art?

Art from Design?

Sculpture from Ornaments?

Poetry from Jingles?

Great Music from Pooh’s Hums?

Great Literature from Daily News?

E. Schaeffer

Perhaps art is an outward expression of ourselves.  Something that would have otherwise remained hidden inside of our mind.  Something that needs expressed because it is a part of who are are.

God The Creative

Colossians 1:16 states, “For by Him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities–all things were created through him and for him.”

God is the creator.  He is a creative being.  He created a masterpiece outside of our own front door.  A work of art that hopefully inspires us to create.

Even now I can see His handiwork.  The sun shines through our front door, the trees mask some of the light, the field is draped with dew, I can see it’s morning wetness from a 1/2 mile away.

The birds enjoy their daily provision.  Their chirps indicate their busyness.  We are alive! Lets get something to eat.  They sing songs of thankfulness for what has been given to them.  I long to live like they do.  Waking up and doing.  They don’t waller in their thoughts, and fret over the future.

God’s Art Forms

  • God is a sculptor.  He formed the mountains, using a variety of stone, shapes, colors and forms.
  • God created sound.  Right now I can hear cicada’s getting the band together.  They are getting ready for some sort of concert, and I can hear them.  What a beautiful thing to hear what’s in our environment.
  • God the landscaper.  Genesis 2:8 “And the Lord God planted a garden in Eden.”  It says that God made trees that were pleasant to the sight and good for food.  His landscaping has purpose and balance.

Here is what I believe is key for people of faith.

“And God said, let us make man in our image, after our likeness….So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him.” Genesis 1:27

We Were Made to Be Creative Like God

Mankind was made in God’s image, and if we believe the account, we understand that we were made to be creative like God.  We were made to express ourselves through some type of art form.  It’s an inherent part of who we are.

It is therefore not a waste of time to pursue being who we were made to be.  In fact if we don’t we are denying a part of who we are.

As we are made to create, we are made to appreciate the creativeness of others.  We should endeavor to inspire others to create.  God gave us the example.  He created the most beautiful things to inspire us.  We should appreciate His art, and it should inspire us to be creative.

Putting Faith & Creativity Together

Why have we left the discussion of creativity outside of the church?  Why do people of faith not take the lead in the creative communities?  Do we not see being creative as part of our faith?

I think it’s sad if we have to separate our faith from our creative pursuits and desires.  I think it’s sad that we can’t find the most progressive art and creative ideas coming from people of faith, who are willing to admit that they are Christian, and are creating like there heavenly Father.

Perhaps I need to start with me.  I am a woman of faith.  I am trying to discover what my art form is, and how I am to use it.  I know I was made to create, like my Father, and I want to share that with the world.  I am on a creative journey, and look forward to what I will discover.
